Why We Don't Offer Board and Trains

When you’re feeling overwhelmed with your dog, board and train programs can sound incredibly appealing. The idea of sending your dog somewhere to learn skills and then bringing them home with their issues “fixed” is understandably appealing.

At Speaking Dog Is Ruff, we want to be very clear and respectful: we do not believe board and train programs are inherently bad, and we know there are skilled, ethical trainers who offer them. Our decision not to provide or generally recommend board and train programs is simply based on our training philosophy, specialties, and the type of support we want to give both dogs and their owners. Our work is built around the belief that meaningful training happens through connection, communication, and collaboration between dogs and their humans. Dogs live their lives with their families, not with trainers. Because of that, we focus on helping owners understand how their dog communicates, what their behavior means, and how to respond in ways that build trust and clarity. Our

goal is not just to change behavior, but to help create relationships that feel safer, calmer, and more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Owner Involvement is Essential to Our Process

One of the biggest reasons we choose not to offer board and train programs is that owners are an essential part of the training process. Dogs learn through a combination of experience, reinforcement, environment, and the relationships they have with the people around them. Timing, body language, handling, and communication all matter, and these things look different from person to person. When owners are actively involved in training sessions, they gain the skills and confidence needed to continue progress long after formal training ends.

Rather than training dogs for owners, we choose to focus on training dogs

and owners together, so everyone understands the process and feels supported.

Considerations for Reactive and Aggressive Dogs

A large part of our work is with dogs who struggle with reactivity or aggression. These dogs are often experiencing fear, frustration, stress, or emotional overload. For many dogs in this state, being removed from their home environment and primary attachment figures can be emotionally challenging. While some dogs may cope well with a board and train setting, others may experience increased stress, which can make behavior concerns more complicated rather than clearer. Because of this, we generally believe that working within the dog’s home environment, alongside their owners, allows for a more supportive and emotionally appropriate approach for these cases.

Every Home Is Unique

No two households are the same. Daily routines, energy levels, family members, visitors, other pets, and physical layouts all influence a dog’s behavior and the household’s interactions with their dog. Because of this, it can be difficult to fully recreate an owner’s real life environment in a board and train setting. By working in the home, we can address behaviors as they naturally occur and provide explanations and guidance that are directly relevant to that specific household. This approach allows for deeper understanding and more practical, sustainable results.

Supporting Owners Through Puppyhood

We also spend a great deal of time supporting owners through the, often challenging, stages of puppyhood. Rather than separating puppies from their families during this important period, we focus on helping owners develop routines that work for them and their household dynamics. By focusing on in home sessions with owners and their puppies, we help build strong communication skills between each other and confidence from the beginning. This helps to set a good foundation and a positive relationship that carries into adulthood, leading to lifelong success.

When Board & Train Programs May Be Appropriate

While board and train programs are not the right fit for our business model, we do recognize that they can be useful in specific, specialized situations. A couple areas where a board and train may be beneficial are when training dogs for hunting or herding. In these cases, training is often task focused and may benefit from controlled environments and repetition. Even then, we believe ongoing owner education remains an important part of long term success and maintaining the skills learned.

If You Are Considering a Board and Train

If you are considering a board and train program, we believe it’s important to take time to reflect on your own morals, ethics, and expectations around dog training. Training methods, handling styles, and philosophies can vary widely from one trainer to another, and it’s essential to find a professional whose approach aligns with what you are comfortable with and believe in.

We strongly encourage owners to thoroughly vet any board and train program they are considering. This includes asking detailed questions about:

  • Training methods and tools used

  • How dogs are managed day-to-day

  • How stress, fear, or behavioral setbacks are handled

  • What owner education and follow-up support looks like

Your dog’s emotional and physical well being should always be a top priority, and choosing a trainer who is transparent, communicative, and aligned with your values can make a significant difference in outcomes. We strongly encourage owners to listen to their instincts. If a trainer is recommending a method or handling your dog in a way that feels uncomfortable, concerning, or misaligned with your values, it is okay to step back. You should never feel pressured to compromise your morals or ethics in the name of results. There are many paths to effective training, and there is no single approach that fits every

dog or every family. If one trainer is unable or unwilling to work within your values to help you reach your goals, there will be another professional who can.

Our Commitment

At Speaking Dog Is Ruff, we are committed to thoughtful, compassionate training that prioritizes emotional well being, understanding, and lasting relationships.

Our choice not to offer board and train programs reflects our desire to:

  • Support dogs in the environments where they live

  • Empower owners with knowledge and skills

  • Build trust and communication on both ends of the leash

There is no single right way to train every dog. This is simply the approach that aligns best with our values and the families we serve.

If this philosophy resonates with you, we would be honored to support you and your dog on your journey.
